Lumbini, May 15, 2018: Peace Torch lit in Lumbini Eternal Peace Flame was carried to Everest Base Camp today to connect and promote the holy birthplace of Lord Buddha and Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world. The event promotes Nepal’s two major tourism icons and World Heritage Properties without fail. Mount Everest was listed in the World Natural Heritage List in 1979 while Lumbini was inscribed in World Cultural Heritage Site in 1997.
Buddhist Monks from various countries including Thailand, China, and Myanmar lit up the torch in Lumbini Eternal Peace Flame and handed over to Olympian Baikuntha Manandhar, international marathon runner Dharma Maharjan and Bhim Gurung.
Good will Ambassador of Lumbini Development Trust and Managing Director of Himalayan Expedition, Bikram Pandey said that promoting two major tourism icons of Nepal, Lumbini and Mt. Everest at a time was the main objective of the event. Promoting other Buddhist sites of Kapilavastu, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Kathmandu and Solukhumbu districts in route to Everest Base Camp is also another objective of the event, Mr. Pandey added.
The torch is being taken to Kapilavastu historic Buddhist sites, Ramagrama of Nawalparasi, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath in Kathmandu, Gumba Danda, Chaplang, Namche, Thame, Khamjung, Konde, Tengeboche, Pangboche, Dengboche and Lobuche Gumba of Solukhumbu district and finally to Everest Base Camp via Gorakhsep and Kala Patthar on May 27.
