WORKSHOP CONDUCTED TO ENLIST TILAURAKOT IN WORLD HERITAGE LIST

The process of Tilaurakot's nomination as a World Heritage Property has been geared up. In the cooperation of the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Department of Archaeology- Nepal, and Lumbini Development Trust conducted a workshop of the experts at Kapilavastu on March 26, 2023. International experts Dr. Duncan Marshall (Australia), Prof. Robin Coningham (UK), Yukio Nishimura (Japan) and Nepali experts Mr. Kai Weise, Prof. Rajesh Rai, Dr. Inu Pradhan, Sristina Shrestha, Rajesh Suwal, Yani Joshi discussed various genres and issues required for the nomination.

Former Director General of DoA Kosh Pd. Acharya, and archaeologist Basant Bidari suggested the conclusion of the workshop derived in two-day discussions. The opinions of the stakeholders were also collected in the workshop.

Vice Chairman of LDT Ven. Metteyya (Awadhesh Tripathi) requested the experts and stakeholders to nominate Tilaurakot as a world heritage property as soon as possible and tap its great potential as ancient Sakya capital where Prince Siddhartha spent his princely life. He also said that available evidence was more than enough to ascertain Tilaurakot as ancient Sakya capital city.

Member of Provincial Assembly of Lumbini Province Hon. Sudhakr Pandey said that there Tilaurakot should be nominated as world heritage property without any further delay, as it fulfills the conditions needed. He further added, "There is no doubt that this is the historic site where prince Siddhartha spent 29 years."

Director General of DoA Damodar Gautam appreciated the outcome of the workshop and thanked national and international experts for their deeper insights and contribution. He also sought cooperation from provincial and local governments to demarcate the boundary of the heritage site.

Joint Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Dr. Suresh Suraj Shrestha said that evidence is being collected for the nomination of Tilaurakot. He said, "Listed in the tentative list of world heritage property, Tilaurakot will be enlisted in the World Heritage within 2024 but it demands collective efforts of all."

Member Secretary of LDT Sanuraja Shakya said that the Trust had already appointed international experts to work for the nomination of Tilaurakot in the world heritage list. Now, local governments should cooperate in the process, he added. 

Chief Secretary of Lumbini Province Pralhad Pokhrel, Deputy Mayor of Kapilavastu Municipality Sunit Gupta, Treasurer Dhundiraj (Siddhicharan) Bhattarai, Project Chief Saroj Bhattarai, Chief Administrative Officer Gyanin Rai and LDT officials also participated the workshop discussions.
