Lumbini, February 21, 2026: Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Sushila Karki visited Lumbini today on an official visit, underscoring the government’s continued attention to the preservation and development of the sacred site. During her visit, she offered prayers and performed traditional rituals at the revered Mayadevi Temple, the exact birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
Upon her arrival, the Prime Minister was warmly received by senior officials and representatives of the Lumbini Development Trust, including its Member-Secretary Deepak Shrestha. The welcoming ceremony reflected the significance of her visit in relation to ongoing conservation and development initiatives in the area.
During the visit, Prime Minister Karki took a keen interest in understanding the historical, cultural, and religious importance of Lumbini. She engaged in discussions with concerned authorities regarding the current state of preservation and highlighted the urgent need to make conservation efforts more systematic, coordinated, and effective. Emphasizing Lumbini’s universal value, she remarked that it is not only a national treasure of Nepal but also a shared heritage of humanity. She stressed that any development undertaken in the region must uphold its authenticity, spiritual essence, and the core values of peace and religious harmony.
On the same occasion, Shyam Roka, a member of the Trust, reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing the long-term master plan for Lumbini in an efficient and coordinated manner. He noted that collaboration among the Trust, local communities, and various stakeholders would be crucial to achieving sustainable and inclusive development.
Officials from the Trust also provided a comprehensive briefing to the Prime Minister, outlining the progress made in infrastructure development, conservation projects, and tourism management, as well as highlighting future plans and existing challenges. The Prime Minister expressed serious concern and interest in these issues and assured that the government would extend the necessary policy guidance and structural support to address the challenges and further strengthen Lumbini’s development in line with its global significance.
